Proposed rule on hospital pricing transparency a chance to be prepared for an issue that is not going away

The Trump administration’s proposed rule that would require hospitals to reveal the rates they have negotiated with insurers for 300 “shoppable services,” among other disclosures, has hospital associations vowing to sue to stop the rule from going into effect on Jan. 1, 2021 as proposed.

Whatever happens with this particular rule, pricing transparency is not going away. The imperative for communication leaders is to ensure you and your organization are prepared for greater transparency, and the proposed rule is the right opportunity to rally your organization to confront the issue.

In a tweet thread, I described how pricing data will be used to affect the reputations of hospitals and outlined six steps hospital communicators can take to prepare for greater pricing transparency. Click below on the first tweet to see the full thread.

In brief, here are the six steps:

  1. Evaluate your hospital’s experience with the chargemaster roll-out from January 2019

  2. Work with the team complying with the new mandate to find your organization’s vulnerabilities.

  3. Make the data easy to find and use.

  4. Develop messages on transparency generally and the specific release for the new mandate.

  5. Determine communication vehicles and messengers for key audiences.

  6. Develop a plan with other leaders to evaluate the data of competitors on release date.
